Uso

There is - indica existência de algo singular no presente

There is a cat on the table. Há um gato na mesa.


There are - indica existência de algo plural no presente

There are three books on the shelf. Há três livros na prateleira.


There was - indica existência de algo singular no passado

There was a party last night. Houve uma festa ontem à noite.


There were - indica existência de algo plural no passado

There were many people studying. Havia muitas pessoas estudando.

Exemplos

There is a book on the table. Há um livro na mesa.

Erro Comum

Usar have para indicar existência (em vez de there + to be)

❌ Had a lot of food.

✅ There was a lot of food.
